Throughout the last 100 years of eyelash extension history, there have been some huge changes. You can get human ones, synthetic ones or even mink ones!

Here at Flossie.com we are here to answer all your eyelash extension questions and queries, so read on, and if you have any questions please contact us and let us know!

What are eyelash extensions?

Eye extensions are a new way to extend the length and thickness of your eyelashes. They should be applied on a hair-by-hair basis for a completely natural look.

Is it safe to get eyelash extensions and does it hurt?

Totally! Eyelash extensions are completely safe and completely painless (which makes a nice change as most vanity treatments that we get done at beauty spas and beauty parlor’s hurt).

You should not be able to feel your lashes once they are applied. If you can feel the weight of them on your eyelids you need to go back and see the beauty therapist who applied your eyelash extensions.

How long will eyelash extensions last?

The length of time that your eyelash extensions will last will depend on three things. First, the quality of the lashes that you are having applied. Secondly, how well you follow the after-care instructions, and finally, the natural growth cycle of your own eyelashes. Your eyelash extensions can last anywhere from two weeks to two months.

Who are eyelash extensions good for?

Eyelash extensions are a great choice for most people. However if one or more of the following conditions alloy to you it is best to call and talk to the salon before purchase the appointment.

  • You rub your eyes frequently
  • You have highly sensitive skin
  • You are sick with a cold or similar or have allergies
  • Your natural lashes are very curly
  • You have no natural lashes

It is recommended that those with light lashes (particularly those with blonde lashes) get their lashes tinted before they have extensions applied to add intensity to the look. For information on eyelash tinting see our eyelash tinting FAQ page.

How long does it take to get eyelash extensions applied?

The amount of time it takes to apply the extensions depends of lashes you are having applied. For instance a half set of extensions can take 30-45 minutes, but a full set of lashes can take from 1-2 hours. Ask the beauty clinic when you phone to book your appointment how long it will take for them to complete the procedure.

Can I wear mascara with my eyelash extensions?

The benefit of eyelash extensions is that there’s no need to wear mascara! If you still feel that you need to, consult with your beauty therapist which ones are appropriate to use. A lot of mascaras on the market (particularly waterproof mascaras) will dissolve the bonds between your extensions and natural eyelashes.

How much will it cost to have eyelash extension applied?

Eyelash extension prices vary, but they typically range from $100 – $300 to apply the lashes.

After 2 or 3 weeks you will loose some of your lashes in their natural cycle, and this is when you will need to get your lashes retouched. Retouching or refills (which is recommended) are around $2 a lash, and many salons have a minimum spend amount required – so it pays to check the terms and conditions before your appointment.

If you do not with to maintain your eyelashes anymore and instead remove them it is best to have a professional beautician do it. It is very important that you do NOT pull the lash extensions off, as you will pull your own lashes off! The removing service is easy and quite relaxing, and should only take about 15 – 30 minutes (at the most). The lashes will be soaked and slowly removed, before your natural lashes are conditioned. Remove prices range from $30.

Why is it important to maintain eyelash extensions?

You want to get the best out of your eyelash extensions, so to do that you need to take proper care of them. Just like you care for your skin and hair you need to care for your lashes so they continue to look their best.

Your eyelash extensions should be resistant to water, tears and steam from 24 hours after your application – so no swimming, showering, crying (no soppy movies!) or sauna’s the day after your extensions are applied. It is best to avoid total submersion (swimming or saps) for up to 48 hours after you have your eyelash extension applied to allow for bonding to totally occur.

Be gentle with your lashes and avoid any oil-based products, and yes that means oil-free makeup remover!

It is best to get your lashes maintained every 4-5 weeks, though of course this does depend on your natural lash cycle.

Are there different sizes of eyelash extensions?

Yes there are! Your beauty therapist should consult with you on which sizes you are interested in and which ones will work best for you.  Eyelash extensions vary in thickness, size etc – there are literally hundreds on the market. You may choose to have a set of the same applied, or choose a mix of lengths/thickness for a more feathery look. Talk to your beauty therapist about you options salons work with different brands and styles.

Fake tanning, also known as sunless tanning, is a great way to wear a golden tan all year round, regardless of your time spent in the sun! Is it safe to use Sprays and Creams as a method of tanning?

Very much so! Fake tanning provides a safe solution to tanning. No excessive exposure to harmful UV rays, that can age and harm the skin.

Will fake tanning hurt?

Gaining a quick tan through the use of Sprays and Creams is completely painless, which is a great change from the painful feeling of burnt skin after a session in the sun!!

How long will my tan last once applied?

Your body constantly drops skin cells from your body, which alters the physical appearance and colour of your skin. Fake Tans, including that of Sprays and Creams effect the outer layer of your skin, therefore your fake tan will fade depending on how often your body drops those outer skin cells, however it is common for fake tans to last between 5 to 10 days.

Results will vary depending on skin type. It is encouraged for ones skin to be moisturised once a fake tan is applied, to keep the skin hydrated and prevent skin cells prematurely falling from your skin, giving you a long lasting tan!

What should I wear to my Spray Tan?

You can wear as little as you like, most salons suggest that you wear a dark bikini, or dark G String, if choosing to go topless. It is also common for many Salons to provide you with a disposable G String that can be used for the tanning session.

What should I do after my Spray Tan?

The salon will provide you with instructions with how to care for your spray tan. Some of the commonly noted points are to avoid showering for 8hours after the spray, wear dark clothing to avoid any staining on clothing, avoid soaking your skin as this could decrease the skins ability to develop its tan, avoid Chlorine and to keep the body moisturised.

Eyebrow Shaping

Eyebrow shaping makes a world of difference. It’s no surprise people pay big bucks to have their eyebrows shaped correctly by professional beauty therapists. The right arch and thickness can frame the face beautifully, but poorly shaped brows can detract from your appearance.

It is an inexpensive way to pamper yourself and boost your confidence! How often have you looked at another woman and said ooooh, I wish I had her brows! Well now you can.

Here at Flossie.com we can answer all your eyebrow questions and queries, so read on, and if you have any questions please contact us and let us know!

What is eyebrow shaping?

Eyebrow shaping is the grooming of the eyebrows, typically by plucking, tweezing or waxing to suit the facial features. The three main techniques used by beauty salons to shape your eyebrows are waxing, threading and Electrolysis.

Why should I get my eyebrows shaped?

Having your eyebrows shaped at a beauty salon or spa by a trained beauty professional is the best way to get the best brow shape for you! Just as each person is different, each brow is different, in fact both your brows can be different to each other, so it is important to have someone trained to shape them perfectly, otherwise you can end up with unsightly and unshaped brows. You want the brow to shape the eye socket and complement your features… Not detract from them. It opens up the eye area, frames the face – and can even make you look younger.

What are the main types of eyebrow shaping at a beauty spa or salon and how long to they last?

Waxing, threading and Electrolysis are the main types of eyebrow shaping done by professionals.

Eyebrow waxing is the most common technique used, and involves hot or cold wax being spread on the hairs outside the shape of the brows, the being pulled quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. The more often you get it done, the less it hurts – so it pays to keep up regular treatment to get the most out of the procedure.

An eyebrow wax usually lasts between 2 to 8 weeks depending on your hair growth. It is best for people with large brows or those who have never tweezed them before.

Threading has been gaining popularity in recent years. It is an ancient form of hair removal that uses a strand of cotton that is twisted amount multiple hairs at the same time and pulled, resulting in many hairs being pulled at once.

Electrolysis is the last beauty clinic treatment used to shape brows. This treatment involves an aesthetician putting an electrical current into each follicle via a small needle. The electrical current zaps the hair and prevents it from growing back, and it is necessary for you to have multiple treatments to completely get rid of the excess hair.

Will getting my eyebrows shaped hurt?

Getting your eyebrows shaped by a beautician will hurt, but a soothing treatment will be applied after. There may be a little redness and raised skin, but this should go down after a few days at the most.

How long does it take to get my eyebrows shaped?

It typically it takes between 15 to 30 minutes to get your brows shaped. Your first appointment may take a little longer as you beautician needs to shape the brow for the first time properly.

Why is the colour of the eyebrow so important?

The two main rules say that dark-haired people should opt for up to two shades lighter eyebrow colour then their hair colour, while light-haired people should do the opposite.

If you find that the colour that you have chosen in the salon isn’t quite right, you can always use brow powders at home to alter the colour.

Blondes should avoid eyebrow colour that is too dark, as it can make too sharp a contrast between the hair colour and the brow colour. It is important for the two colours to harmonise with each other.

Anything else I should know?

If you have a big day coming up (like a Wedding or Formal) don’t schedule your brow wax the day before, give your skin some time to heal.

A good rule of thumb is the thinner the brow – the harder it is to maintain!

How much does eyebrow shaping cost?

Typically, waxing costs between $10 and $50 a treatment.

Threading is more expensive then waxing, and usually costs between $35 and $60 per visit.

Electrolysis can be very expensive with $15 minute sessions costing anywhere from $20 to $100 each. Most eyebrows require 8-12 sessions to completely rid yourself of unwanted hair, and appointments need to be scheduled about one to two weeks apart, so it can be a difficult and expensive process.

Eyelash Tinting

While a trip to the beach requires a great bikini or one-piece, it does not require makeup! For those of you who still prefer to flutter their lashes while baking in the golden sun there is a solution… eyelash tinting!

How to tint eyelashes…

Whether you have light or dark lashes naturally, with tinting, you will always have dark sultry eyes, without the need for mascara! We here at Flossie are here to answer all your eyelash tinting questions and queries. So read on, and if you have any questions please contact us and let us know!

The eyes are an important vessel for expressing emotion. The ancient Egyptians certainly knew how to draw attention and take advantage of them! These days, thanks to our modern ways we do a little less bug-crunching and a little more eyelash tinting but with the same great results!

What is eyelash tinting?

Eyelash tinting is a process where your eyelashes are dyed to make them look darker. It depends on your skin type, hair colour etc. on what the end result will be, but you can get your lashes tinted black, blue, shades of brown, grey or whatever you wish.

It does not make your eyelashes longer, it’s purpose it to give them colour to highlight their true length and make them darker.

Who is eyelash tinting good for?

It is particularly great for people who are sporty (and sweaty) because they do not need mascara! Those who wear contact lenses also benefit as well as those who do not have the time to apply makeup daily. For woman who have naturally blonde lashes eyelash tinting creates a dramatic look around the clock.

The best benefit of eyelash tinting it is that it is 24/7, unlike mascara, which has to be applied every morning, and washed off every night.

Eyelash tinting is also great if you are going on holiday! Having dyed eyelashes means you can jump into the water and not worry about black smudgy makeup appearing under your eyes.

Is eyelash tinting safe?

Eyelash tinting is not dangerous, with the dye typically being made from a vegetable-based dye. This minimises irritation around the eyes and is the reason that the tinting is not permanent. It is however important to go to a salon that has experienced beauty therapist who have been doing eyelash tinting for some time to avoid issues with the eyes such stinging, watery eyes and in sever cases reactions of the eye.

Can I wear mascara after having my eyelashes tinted?

Of course you can!

Can short lashes be tinted too?

They can be, but it can be bit challenging. In rare cases the tinting can dye the skin (this usually only lasts for a few days) so it is best to call the salon first and ask their advice if you have unusually short lashes.

What about deep-set eyes?

Deep set-eyes are a little more challenging than normal. When having the procedure, you must close your eyes in order for the dye to be put on the top of the top lashes and this can be harder with deep-set eyes. Again it is best to call the salon first and ask their advice if you have unusually deep-set eyes.

How long does it take?

Because the whole procedure takes around 15-30 minutes, it can fit into the busiest of schedules.

How much does it cost?

Prices vary, depending on the salon you are having the tint done at and the experience of the beauty therapist. Eyelash tinting typically ranges from $25 to $35 individually but prices will vary when it is combined with other offers (especially Flossie offers).

What is the procedure?

Once you arrive at the salon, you beauty therapist will place cotton under your closed eyes and then apply a small amount of vegetable dye onto your eyelashes. After ten minutes, the dye is removed with water with the results could last around four to six weeks.

There are a number of dyes available, so ensure you talk to your beauty therapist about which one they are using before you start your procedure.
